It would normally be more obvious, but here it has some special quality. One of the funniest cult movies around - timeless and classic! The way the central couple are shown to be loving in spite of evident frustrations (Ugo Tognazzi makes an excellent, more restrained foil), and the way the son seems to have turned out such a kind, tolerant individual, place the film way ahead of its time in political terms, even if this wasn't the main point in making it. Despite their initial surprise Renato and Albin handle the news well, much better than the young couple expect her overbearing and conservative parents will. While the Bird Cage is wonderful in its own accord-this film adaptation of the show has some very poignant and touching moments and incredible music that the other doesn't. Both Molinaro and Serrault are dead now, but they go on giving much pleasure in these two life-affirming films. From the first few minutes with Zaza'a major strop, through to the bitchiness in the final Church scene, the whole film is a pure hystrical delight. This is the original movie (based on a French play) that The Birdcage and the English language stage production, La Cage, is based upon. But it can get away with this because of the way it is pitched as a farce, unlike, say, Outrageous!, which deals with somewhat similar themes but has more serious undercurrents as well. Not to discredit Robbin Williams and Nathan Lane's attempt, but the French version doesn't 'try' to go for laughs the way the American version does - it already 'is' funny. French w/eng subtitles! If you want a film to take you out of yourself and probably be reduced to eye-watering laughter, this is worth a look at a very reasonable price. I see that the description has been updated now to state that it's dubbed, but I would still advise against renting or purchasing this version because, as other reviewers have said, it's very poorly dubbed.
